1074 - A Rare Chaffers Liverpool European Landscape sauceboat c 1758-60
This sauceboat is made in a popular shape which originated in saltglaze stoneware.
European decoration is rare on Chaffers pieces made at a time when Chinoiserie was the fashion, with a relatively small number of items decorated in this fashion being known. In Hillis's Liverpool porcelain book which illustrates around 170 pieces of Chaffers only six have European landscape decoration.
The sauceboat is 16 cms long. At some point it has been dropped on the apex of the rear foot from which a star crack has emanated and resulted in extended fine cracks travelling up the body and on the base. There is a chip on the rim.
